Hi, my name is Julie and I live in Poole, Dorset near the coast.  I am married with 2 children and 2 grandchildren.   My hobby for more years than I care to remember, has always been dressmaking, but at the end of 2008 I decided to look for something different to “get my teeth into” !!

After searching various sites through Google, I found several USA websites for sock monkeys which looked interesting.  I decided to find out the history of this craft ….

It seems that in America during the 1880’s the Nelson Knitting Company was the first company worldwide to manufacture socks.   These were sturdy and comfortable, and worn by farmers and factory workers.   These quality socks were intended to be used as work socks, but they became much more when, back in the 1900’s mothers started crafting them into monkeys and other toys for their children to play with – and so the SOCK MONKEY was born.  

The original socks were grey tweed with a white and red heel (this is the part that became the monkey’s mouth) and so all the monkeys basically looked the same.   However, with the variety of socks that can be bought today, there are an infinite number of different coloured toys that can be made.

My first efforts in making one of these toys was a monkey who my grandson called GODFREY !   He was okay, but nowhere near a good enough specimen to sell.   After working my way through many pairs of socks, and producing monkeys with wonky ears or crooked mouths, I eventually perfected them to a high enough standard to sell on this site.

After a while, I thought it would be nice to make some different “creatures” and these are the ones you will find on this site today.  They are so much fun to make, and each toy takes on it’s own unique character as it is made, and they are all completely original, sometimes strange and whimsical, but always charming and very cuddly !

Children seem to love the bright colours and the “squashiness” of them, plus they are getting a toy that no other child will have !!!!

So, please take a look at the SOCKIES and I am sure you won’t be able to resist placing an order – (or two) !   Toys will be sent out on the same day as payment is received, and normally would be delivered within 2/3 days – and remember, Postage and Packing is included.
 
Only brand new socks are used to ensure that all characters are fresh and clean, and toys can be hand-washed with care with warm water.

All sock toys are stuffed with Polyester Stuffing to BS5852 and seams are sewn with a stretch stitch.  Limbs are sewn on three times for extra strength.

New stock is generally added on a weekly basis, so please check the site when you can to see what other creatures there are !!!

Toys are not suitable for children under 4 years of age and should be kept away from naked flames.
